Sahlep Recipe

 

Sahlep is indispensable drink for winter days and very famous in Turkey. Usulally made by sahlep mixtures sold in markets but it is not natural.

Sahlep powder made from one kind of orchid. It is expensive but 2 tsp of powdered sahlep made 2 cups of drinks, so 6 grams of sahlep is enough for two.

You can find powdered sahlep in Middle Eastern and Turkish Markets.

NOTES:

  • For the measurement cups which i use please look at “measurements” .
  • Mades 2 cups. (250 ml x 2)
  • Amount of granulated sugar depends on you. I made low sugar. You can use honey instead of sugar when you take away the milk from the heat.
  • I use stick cinnamon, if you dan’t have use half tsp of ground cinnamon.
  • Rose water is optional. But i suggest you to use. Rose water must be suitable for use with foods.

Ingredients:

  • 500 ml milk
  • 2 tsp powdered sahlep (6 gr)
  • 6 tsp granulated sugar (25 gr) (Low sugar)
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 tsp rose water
  • Ground cinnamon, crushed walnuts or almonds

Directions:

  1. Pour the milk in a small soucepan.
  2. Add stick cinnamon, ginger, sahlep and sugar. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
  3. Remove froum the heat. Add rose water and whisk. You see that mixture thickens.
  4. Remove stick cinnamon and serve the sahlep onto the cups.
  5. Sprinkle ground cinnamon and crushed walnuts. Serve hot.
